This is super informative! I left my job during the end of 2022 (what you call Layofftopia) and I did it without another lined up. I did it to focus on more quality interviewing. Call it calculated risk taking or call it stupidity. I shared my story here:
A Working Girl's Advice for the 21st Century | My Personal Story
I've also worked with clients who did the same thing, leaving their job with nothing lined up in 2023, not knowing the wave that was coming. Once they landed a new gig, they felt less sheepish about "mis-timing" the market. They realized that their reasons for leaving weren't any less valid just because the market shifted.
I love your reflection and especially this advice: "Don’t build your life around what looks good on a resume but what would feel good when you’re old."
It took me a decade working before I started making career decisions based on what I truly want. Now, I use this advice from my husband as a decision framework: "Do something your 10-year old self would think is cool or what your 80 year old self would find worthwhile."
Thanks Erika.
Great post.

These points resonate deeply with me as I navigate my job search this year. Thank you, Erika, for your invaluable sharing 🙏🏻
