Whisper #6
What's one thing I could do to make this time most valuable to you?
Those of us in the corporate world spend more time in meetings than we would like. Sometimes, we take our 1:1 conversations for granted and forget that they should be the most leveraged conversations of all.
Sometimes, they feel like a welcomed break from 5+ person meetings where the spotlight is on us (or where we're wondering why we're even in the room).
Other times, they are with someone we trust and look forward to connecting with, so they are a bright spot in the day.
And yet other times they are the conversations we dread the most, with someone with whom we're constantly in conflict.
Either way, 1:1s tend to be more emotionally loaded than productivity-loaded.
Even if you think you're the only one who feels this, you're not. The other person feels it too.
Why not try to make these conversations more productive and less emotionally loaded?
a low-stakes experiment for you
For your next emotionally loaded 1:1 (that is, either a “warm blanket” type or a “dreaded interaction” type), kick off the conversation by asking the other person:
"What's one thing I can do to make this time most valuable to you?"
